Magnus Carlsen is the greatest chess player to play and will ever play. However, we have to take into effect the age of the internet and the impact it has on the game. More publicity, more tournaments, more online play, etc. Also, it has become such a powerful resource for GMs to perfect their craft. I am not knocking any other grandmaster but I wonder what Bobby Fischer could've done had he had the internet to play and/or practice on.
However, the consistency of Magnus is undeniable.
Bobby Fischer said something to the effect that you cannot compare the great players across eras, because the great players of the past did not have access to the data, information and analytics about the game that players in the present do.
I read often in chess commentary that today's GM's are supposedly stronger than ever compared to the past, but I don't see how anyone can possibly know that. Morphy, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tal, Fischer did not have access to today's tools; hence, it is impossible to know for sure how "strong" those players were by today's standards.
Fischer suggested the better question is: who is or was the most talented player of all time? As I recall, he specifically mentioned Capablanca and Morphy. Fischer died of course before Magnus Carlsen came to the forefront.
The title of "Greatest of All Time" (GOAT) in chess is subjective and depends on individual opinions. Magnus Carlsen's achievements, including his long reign as World Chess Champion and his consistently high level of play, certainly make a strong case for him being considered one of the greatest.

To me he's the GOAT of this generation, not it being even close, and wheter he is greater than Kasparov or not, it's personal apreciation. As far as I am concerned, Carlsen is the GOATEST GOAT of all time
