Hey all. I'd like to propose a chess variant: fantasy Chess. The variant would work as follows:
There would be an extra "setup" game phase where players take turns placing a piece in a square on the 2 rows closest to them. They can place say 40 points worth of pieces.
There are additional pieces to choose from. Examples:
Cannon (from Chinese chess) moves like a rook, but to take must jump over a piece. (Value about 4 points)
Wizard - moves like a king OR may teleport to a vacant square (about 10 points)
Troll-moves up to 2 squares in any direction (including Knight moves) cannot move through an attached square and cannot move if the square occupied is attached. Cannot be taken (the troll turns to stone when attached) (value 8 points?)
Pikeman. Like a pawn but takes directly ahead. Promotes to a knight. (1 point?)
...there are many other possibilities. One idea is to have different types of king (such as a Chinese chess king that moves only diagonally and cannot leave a 'palace'. This would be cheaper than a normal king.
Discuss?
