Not that i oppose this, but i actually think that lack of avatar's makes this site less "cluttered" and more classy.
An avatar can convey so much meaning to the 'Internet personality' you're trying to establish over the course of time ... right now the only place on Lichess which lets us feel like the special little snowflakes which we are is the 'About Me' paragraph on your profile page, but as they say, a picture expresses more than a thousand words!

Provided you're just asking for a handful of images that could be selected from, I'd support this idea. If lichess allowed for custom avatars, however, I can only imagine the stress the mods would go through having hundreds of reports a day over "offensive images" flooding in over the first few months.
