hey folks I blundered a few pieces in the beginning because I forgot about drops in the 2 move checkmate. so I tried to play a strong defense and eventually the tables turned. I have a few questions here:

white's first blunder was underpromotion but please tell what you would have done.
now second and most importantly, how does a player avoid ending up like white here:

three pieces near the king defended by pawns and a lone knight but theres not threat of mate. sure I took advantage of it but obviously it doesnt take a strong player to capitalize on the position. I want to know what specific errors white made. please.
